Canada Targets Skilled Workers Through Expanded Express Entry Categories

March 28, 2026

Canada has announced plans to recruit skilled professionals across several key sectors under its Express Entry category-based immigration system.

The government said it will issue targeted invitations to candidates with specific skills and experience to address labour shortages and support economic growth.

The selected categories include doctors, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, as well as applicants with French language proficiency.

Priority sectors include health and social services, skilled trades, education and STEM fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Professionals in transportation-related occupations are also included under the latest round of category-based invitations.

The system allows Canada to select candidates based on labour market needs, rather than relying solely on overall immigration scores.

Authorities say the initiative aims to fill critical workforce gaps while strengthening the country’s economy and public service sectors.
