Sri Lanka Railways to Introduce Digital Ticketing System

March 29, 2026

Plans are underway to replace traditional paper tickets in Sri Lanka’s railway service with a new digital system, aimed at improving efficiency and passenger convenience.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Prasanna Gunasena, stated that modern ticket-checking equipment has already been introduced at railway stations as part of this initiative.

He noted that the move is part of a broader effort to modernize railway services and enhance the overall travel experience. The project is expected to be completed before the end of this year.

According to the Deputy Minister, the new system will be implemented by expanding the existing online booking platform.

A pilot project is set to begin in April along the Kelani Valley railway line. The initial phase will cover stations including Narahenpita, Nugegoda, Makumbura, Homagama and Padukka.

Following the pilot phase, authorities plan to extend the digital ticketing system to railway lines across the country.
