The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning over prevailing high temperatures, urging the public to take extra care, especially for the elderly and those with illnesses.
Director of Weather Forecasting and Disaster Management, Meril Mendis, stated that the current hot weather conditions are expected to continue until the end of May.
The advisory places several areas under a “Caution” level, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, North Western, Northern and North Central provinces, as well as the Monaragala District.
Under this level, the heat index — or the temperature felt on the human body — is high enough to require increased attention, as prolonged exposure could lead to health issues.
Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and monitoring vulnerable individuals.
