The Ministry of Education has issued a new circular outlining updated measures to ensure discipline within schools.
The directive has been sent to Provincial Secretaries of Education, Provincial and Zonal Education Directors, Deputy and Assistant Directors, heads of Pirivena institutions, and school principals.
According to the Ministry, these guidelines are to be implemented alongside the existing circular issued on April 29, 2016, on maintaining school discipline.
The circular also highlights a Supreme Court ruling, emphasizing that children must not be subjected to any form of physical or psychological harm under any circumstances.
It clearly states that corporal punishment, in any form or at any level, is strictly prohibited, and violators will face legal action.
The Ministry further stressed that school authorities must give special attention to the principles set out in the Supreme Court ruling when handling disciplinary matters involving students.
