Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has raised concerns in Parliament over the government’s current policy on digital asset trading.
He called for clarity on the measures taken to monitor cryptocurrency transactions since early 2025, highlighting concerns over capital outflows through platforms such as Binance due to the absence of a clear legal framework.
The MP also sought details on the taxation of crypto profits, as well as the methods used to assess transaction volumes in 2023, 2024, and 2025. In addition, he questioned the level of coordination between the Central Bank, the Financial Intelligence Unit, and the Criminal Investigation Department in preventing fraud and money laundering linked to digital assets.
Karunanayake further urged the government to explain how it plans to keep pace with regulatory developments in countries such as India, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates in the rapidly evolving digital asset space.
