Ravi questions Central Bank on debt relief amid crisis

March 27, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has called on the Central Bank to clarify what relief measures will be provided to the public in managing debt obligations amid the current global crisis linked to the Iran conflict.

Speaking to the media, he said the Central Bank must clearly outline how it plans to address the financial burden on people during such a challenging period.

He raised concerns over whether borrowers will be required to continue servicing their loans as usual or if a grace period or other relief measures will be introduced.

Karunanayake also recalled that during the economic collapse in 2022, many individuals were left in difficulty due to certain decisions taken by the Central Bank, stressing the need to avoid a similar situation this time.
