No Immediate Water Cuts Planned as Supply Restored in Kandy Areas

April 19, 2026

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) says no decision has been taken to implement new water cuts at present, despite ongoing dry weather conditions.

NWSDB Chairman Chandana Bandara stated that water resources are currently being managed effectively.

Water distribution, which was disrupted for 10 days from April 6 to 15 in areas including Kandy and Kundasale, has now been restored.

The disruption was caused by operational issues at the Balagolla Water Treatment Plant, where heavy silt and mud—resulting from Cyclone Ditwah—blocked intake points and affected pump operations and filtration processes.

Authorities also noted that recent extreme heat has significantly reduced water levels in the Victoria Reservoir.

To address the issue, the NWSDB constructed a temporary dam and restored purification systems, while continuing to supply water via bowsers in some areas.

Plans are underway to divert water directly to the treatment plant using pipelines connected to the Haragama pool within the reservoir, with completion expected within the next two to three days.
