Free Media Movement Condemns CID Request to X Over Journalist’s Post

April 19, 2026

The Free Media Movement (FMM) has condemned the Criminal Investigation Department Sri Lanka over a reported request made to X (formerly Twitter) regarding a journalist’s post on the country’s energy crisis.

In a statement, the FMM said journalist Sulochana Ramiah Mohan had received a notification from X indicating that the platform had received a legal request from the CID concerning content shared from her account.

According to the notice, the CID claimed that a post linking to her article—titled “Govt seeks time to address power ministry issue”—violated Sri Lankan law.

However, X stated that no action had been taken on the content.

The FMM said it had reviewed both the article and the related post and found no illegal material, adding that the basis for the CID’s request remains unclear.

Condemning the move, the organisation described it as a serious interference with freedom of expression and stated that it would raise the issue with both local and international stakeholders.
