Low-Floor Priority Bus Service to Launch from Makumbura Tomorrow

April 20, 2026

A new low-floor priority bus service will be launched as a pilot project from tomorrow (21) from the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center under the patronage of Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake.

The initiative, introduced under the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, aims to promote equal access and dignity in public transport. A total of Rs. 430.7 million has been allocated for the project.

In its first phase, 10 modern air-conditioned low-floor buses will be deployed, designed to provide easy access for wheelchair users and passengers with disabilities.

Each bus has a capacity of 80 passengers, including 33 seats, and is equipped with enhanced safety features.

The service will operate between Makumbura and Pettah, as well as Makumbura and Kadawatha, with buses running every 40 minutes during peak hours.

The route network will also provide access to major healthcare institutions, including the Apeksha Hospital and the Colombo National Hospital.
