Sri Lanka Plans Barrier-Free Toll System on Expressways

April 22, 2026

The Road Development Authority Sri Lanka (RDA) is planning to introduce a new toll collection system known as Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) on expressways.

RDA Director General Anuradha Hettiarachchi stated that the new system will initially operate alongside the existing Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system.

The MLFF system is a modern, barrier-free solution that allows vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping or slowing down. Instead of traditional toll booths and barriers, it uses advanced technology to automatically identify vehicles.

Under this system, toll charges will be deducted directly from the vehicle owner’s bank account through number plate recognition technology.

The system is already in use in several countries worldwide and is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and waiting times on expressways.

However, during the initial phase, the RDA noted that motorists will still be able to pay toll charges using credit or debit cards, allowing both the new MLFF system and existing payment methods to operate simultaneously.
