Sri Lanka and Iran Discuss Rescue Efforts, Bilateral Ties in Ministerial Call

April 23, 2026

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, focusing on recent developments and bilateral relations.

During the call, Araghchi expressed appreciation for the Sri Lankan government’s role in rescuing sailors of the IRIS Dena and assisting in the repatriation of the bodies of its crew and other Iranian naval personnel to Iran, according to the Iranian Embassy in Sri Lanka.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also outlined what he described as crimes committed by the United States and Israel against Iran. He characterised the attack on the IRIS Dena as an “unprecedented war crime” by the United States, stating that it constituted a serious violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. He added that Iran would pursue all legal and political avenues to hold those responsible accountable.

The discussion also covered broader bilateral relations and regional developments, according to a communiqué issued by the Iranian Embassy in Sri Lanka.
