The National People’s Power (NPP) has announced plans to organise 21 May Day rallies at the district level across the country to mark International Workers’ Day.
The party had initially planned to hold three major rallies in the hill country, the North, and Colombo. However, due to the prevailing fuel crisis, party leaders decided it would be difficult to arrange transportation for supporters to attend large centralised events.
Following a meeting chaired by NPP leader and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with district organisers, it was decided to instead conduct decentralised rallies and parades at district level to maximise participation.
Under the revised plan, President Dissanayake is expected to attend May Day events in the hill country, covering Badulla and Nuwara Eliya districts, as well as a separate celebration in Maharagama.
Tilvin Silva is scheduled to take part in rallies in Tangalle and Matara, while Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya will participate in the Ratnapura event.
Minister K. D. Lalkantha is expected to attend rallies in Kandy, Kegalle, and Kurunegala, while Vijitha Herath will join events in Puttalam and Gampaha. Bimal Ratnayake is set to participate in celebrations in the Northern Province.
Other ministers, including Sunil Handunnetti, Nalinda Jayatissa, Anura Karunathilaka, and Harshana Nanayakkara, are also expected to attend district-level events.
The theme of this year’s NPP May Day celebrations is “People’s Power for a People’s Government.”
