Maldives Govt Defends Police Action Over Report Alleging Affair Involving President Muizzu

May 2, 2026

Authorities in the Maldives have defended police action against a local media outlet following the release of a documentary alleging an affair involving President Mohamed Muizzu.

According to reports, the online news platform Adhadhu Online aired a documentary titled “Aisha” on March 28, featuring an anonymous woman who claimed she had a personal relationship with the President.

Weeks later, Maldivian police reportedly conducted a raid on the media outlet, during which computers were seized and travel bans were imposed on editors connected to the publication.

The Maldivian government has defended the operation, stating that the action was carried out lawfully in response to what President Muizzu described as “baseless lies.”

The incident has drawn attention within media and civil society circles over concerns relating to press freedom and the treatment of journalists in the Maldives.

No official evidence supporting the allegations against the President has been publicly presented.
