Ravi Karunanayake Calls for UNP–SJB Merger

May 4, 2026

Ravi Karunanayake says the time has come for the United National Party and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to unite for the benefit of the people.

Speaking on the current political situation, the former UNP Deputy Leader stated that political groups that had previously split should first work toward unity in order to move forward with a clear national vision.

According to Karunanayake:

“We need to move forward with a program that practically unites without saying Veddi Bana.”

He further stated that personal differences and political obstacles should be set aside in the interest of the country.

The MP also remarked:

“Those ghosts and those hackers can be one. The time has come to think for the people. For that, the two parties need to be merged.”

The comments come amid continuing discussions within opposition political circles in Sri Lanka regarding:

  • Opposition unity
  • Electoral alliances
  • Future political strategies
  • Possible cooperation between the UNP and SJB

The SJB was formed in 2020 following a split within the UNP, leading to long-standing divisions within Sri Lanka’s traditional opposition political base.
