Ravi Karunanayake Calls for Political Unity, Criticizes Central Bank Approach

May 13, 2026

Ravi Karunanayake says political parties should unite and work together if they genuinely care about the future of Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the media, the former United National Party Deputy Leader acknowledged that every government faces challenges when managing a country, but argued that practical solutions exist if leaders work collectively.

According to Karunanayake:

  • Every government encounters economic and administrative difficulties
  • Practical answers are needed to overcome national challenges
  • Such an approach is currently lacking

The MP further stressed that:

“If there is love for the country, it should begin from there.”

He argued that the current moment requires cooperation among all political groups rather than division.

Karunanayake also criticized the approach of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, alleging that the institution is operating within a theoretical framework rather than responding to public concerns.

He claimed that:

  • The Central Bank is disconnected from the problems faced by ordinary citizens
  • Economic policies require more practical implementation
  • The institution has failed to demonstrate a sufficiently practical role in addressing current economic challenges

The comments come amid ongoing national debate surrounding:

  • Economic recovery policies
  • Currency stability
  • Inflation pressures
  • Financial sector reforms
  • Broader political cooperation during Sri Lanka’s recovery process
