Railway Guards Announce 24-Hour Token Strike; Train Services May Be Disrupted Tomorrow

June 10, 2026

The Sri Lanka Railway Guards’ Union has warned that train services may be disrupted tomorrow (10) due to a 24-hour token strike planned by railway guards.

Union Secretary Rukmal Bandara stated that night trains currently in operation will be allowed to reach their destinations as scheduled. However, railway guards have decided not to report for duty on trains scheduled to commence services tomorrow morning.

Accordingly, the union has announced a 24-hour trade union action beginning tomorrow.

Explaining the reasons for the strike, Bandara alleged that railway cranes have been operated for several days in violation of established safety regulations and departmental procedures, creating potential risks to passengers, railway employees, and Railway Department property.

He further claimed that the union had repeatedly warned authorities about the issue, but the concerns had not been addressed.

“We have informed the relevant authorities on several occasions and requested that such situations not be allowed to recur. However, despite our warnings, similar incidents have occurred again,” he said.

The union also stated that it had requested disciplinary action against those responsible for the alleged violations, but claimed that no response had been received from the authorities.

“As there has been no action taken regarding our requests, we have decided to proceed with a token strike,” Bandara added.

Passengers are advised to check the status of train services before commencing their journeys, as the trade union action may result in delays, cancellations, or disruptions across parts of the railway network.
