Sri Lankan javelin champion Rumesh Tharanga has thanked those who offered financial assistance to replace his damaged equipment, while urging the public to extend similar support to other athletes across the country.
In a statement, Tharanga said he will receive replacement javelins from the company responsible for the damage. However, he noted that many athletes in Sri Lanka are forced to spend their own money on essential sporting equipment.
He said he had received offers of financial support sufficient to purchase around 100 javelins, but called on those willing to help to instead consider supporting other athletes who face financial difficulties.
“Please extend that love to other athletes of our nation, because it is difficult to pursue sports in Sri Lanka,” he said.
Tharanga also clarified that he has not accepted any money or even a single rupee from anyone, saying his appeal was intended to highlight the difficulties faced by talented athletes from financially disadvantaged families.
He added that he plans to undertake a significant initiative following the 2026 Asian Games.
