Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has called on the government to modernise Sri Lanka’s procurement process, describing the current system as outdated and overly conservative.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said the country’s procurement methodology still relies on traditional procedures that no longer meet present-day requirements.
He noted that procurement reforms had previously been introduced with the involvement of former Finance Minister K.N. Choksy, former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, and himself.
According to the MP, those reforms included a proposal to review and update the Procurement Committee framework every five years.
Karunanayake said it is regrettable that while many government processes have advanced through digitalisation and other modern methods, the procurement system has remained largely unchanged.
He urged the government to revise the existing procurement framework and implement practical reforms to make the process more efficient and transparent.
