Ravi raises concerns over declining purchasing power

June 26, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has expressed concern over rising inflation and the declining purchasing power of the public, saying recent figures on per capita monthly expenditure have surprised many.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake referred to reports indicating a per capita monthly expenditure of Rs. 17,170, noting that many people questioned whether the figure was even related to Sri Lanka.

He said the rising cost of living has significantly reduced people’s purchasing power, asking what could once be bought for Rs. 100 compared to what the same amount can purchase today.

Karunanayake stressed that the government and relevant authorities should implement practical measures to reduce the cost of living and create conditions that enable people to maintain a reasonable standard of living.
