Final Turbine Shipment Arrives for Mannar’s 50 MW HayWind Wind Power Project

July 6, 2026

The Ministry of Energy has announced that the final shipment of turbines for the 50 MW HayWind Wind Power Plant under construction in Mannar has arrived at the Port of Trincomalee.

The first shipment of turbines reached Sri Lanka several weeks ago, and installation work is already underway at the project site.

According to the Ministry, the project has secured a power purchase agreement at US$0.0465 (approximately Rs. 14.37) per unit, making it the lowest electricity tariff recorded in Sri Lanka for wind power generation.

Once operational, the wind farm is expected to save the country approximately Rs. 4.7 billion in foreign exchange each year by reducing the need for fossil fuel imports. It is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 186,300 metric tonnes annually.

The project will contribute towards Sri Lanka’s target of generating 70 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and support the country’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Construction of the wind power project commenced in January this year, and it is scheduled for completion by March 2027. Upon completion, it will add 50 MW of renewable electricity to the national grid.

The turbines will be installed and maintained by Hayleys Fentons PLC, while the National System Operator (NSO) under the Ministry of Energy will be responsible for overseeing system control and grid management.
