Sri Lanka’s tourism receipts declined by 11.5% during the first seven months of this year compared with the corresponding period last year, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Tourism earnings fell from US$2,031.1 million between January and July last year to US$1,796.7 million during the same period this year.
Tourism receipts in July also declined from US$318.5 million last year to US$285.5 million this year.
Meanwhile, remittances sent by Sri Lankans working overseas recorded a significant increase during the same period.
Remittances rose from US$4,435.2 million in the first seven months of last year to US$8,382.4 million during the corresponding period this year.
Monthly remittances also increased from US$697.3 million in July last year to US$777.6 million in July this year.
