The National Council for Road Safety (NCRS) has announced that legal action will be taken from the end of September against public transport buses that fail to undergo mandatory vehicle condition inspections.
NCRS Chairman Manjula Kularatne said the registration of vehicle inspectors and authorised vehicle repair centres is currently in progress as part of the new inspection programme.
Under the proposed system, public transport buses will be required to undergo condition inspections every 5,000 kilometres or once every three months, whichever comes first.
Kularatne also said the authorities are planning to extend the mandatory inspection programme to cover all vehicles in the future as part of efforts to improve road safety standards across the country.
