The parliamentary inquiry into a remittance-based electric-vehicle import scheme has been sent for legal review, alongside several COPE findings referred to the anti-corruption commission.
Parliament has approved the referral of a Committee on Public Accounts investigation into Sri Lanka’s electric-vehicle import scheme for overseas workers to the Attorney General.
The inquiry examined how the scheme operated between 1 May 2022 and 15 September 2023, when Sri Lankans employed abroad were permitted to import fully electric vehicles using foreign remittances.
Parliament also approved referring matters identified in several Committee on Public Enterprises reports to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
The institutions named included the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital Board, Land Reform Commission, Sabaragamuwa University, Civil Aviation Authority, Lanka Sathosa, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and the National Savings Bank.
The referrals do not amount to findings of criminal liability. They allow the Attorney General and the anti-corruption commission to determine whether further legal or investigative action is warranted.
