Ravi Karunanayake Says Political Power Is Temporary, Calls for National Unity

July 25, 2026

Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake says political power is temporary and should not be viewed as a permanent entitlement.

Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake was responding to a journalist’s question regarding a reported statement by a government minister that the current administration would remain in power for another 20 years.

He said that while political parties often make various promises to gain power, governments tend to focus on retaining power once elected, rather than addressing the concerns of the public.

Karunanayake stressed that the time has come for all political parties to work together in the national interest, adding that such cooperation would put an end to divisive political rhetoric.

He said national unity is essential to move the country forward and achieve sustainable development.

Reiterating his position, Karunanayake noted that political power is only a temporary mandate granted by the people and should never be regarded as a permanent inheritance.
