Ravi Karunanayake Alleges Central Bank Is Avoiding Key Economic Issues

July 20, 2026

Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has accused the Central Bank of failing to adequately address key economic issues, saying it should focus on both controlling inflation and strengthening the economy.

Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake said the public deserves a clear explanation of whether inflation is being driven by rising import costs or by increasing domestic demand.

He argued that identifying the source of inflation is essential, as the policy response would differ depending on whether the inflation is imported or demand-driven.

Karunanayake questioned why the Central Bank has not provided clear answers on these issues, despite its responsibility for maintaining economic and financial stability.

He further alleged that the Central Bank should not avoid addressing such concerns when they arise, but instead provide transparent explanations and appropriate policy measures.
