Ravi Karunanayake Calls for Strong Political Leadership to Address Sri Lanka’s Challenges

July 19, 2026

Former United National Party Deputy Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake says Sri Lanka needs strong political leadership to overcome its current economic and political challenges.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Karunanayake said both the United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) require strong leadership to effectively respond to the country’s present situation.

He argued that the absence of effective political leadership has contributed to the economic hardships currently faced by the public.

Karunanayake also questioned why the reported growth in the economy has not translated into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens, despite official claims of economic improvement.

He pointed to the rising cost of living, increasing transport fares and disparities in rice prices as factors that continue to place significant pressure on households.

The MP further stressed that a united political front led by capable leadership from the UNP and the SJB is necessary to strengthen the opposition and promote policies aimed at improving public welfare.

Karunanayake said Sri Lanka is passing through a critical period and emphasized that the country’s economic recovery remains at a sensitive stage, requiring responsible leadership and sound policymaking.
