Lieutenant General Nilantha Premaratne has been appointed as the new Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, succeeding Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo, who has completed his tenure as the 25th Commander of the Army.
Prior to his appointment, Lieutenant General Premaratne served as the 69th Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, the second-highest position in the service. He assumed those duties on June 1, 2026, at Army Headquarters.
An officer of the Sri Lanka Artillery, Lieutenant General Premaratne previously served as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and also held the position of Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Artillery.
His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter in the leadership of the Sri Lanka Army following the conclusion of Lieutenant General Rodrigo’s tenure.
