The Department of Irrigation has issued a flood warning for several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River, following heavy rainfall in the river’s upper catchment areas over the past several hours.
The warning, issued at 12:30 p.m. today (03), will remain in effect until 12:30 a.m. tomorrow (04).
According to the Department, the advisory applies to low-lying areas within the following Divisional Secretariat Divisions:
- Udunuwara
- Udapalatha
- Yatinuwara
- Ganga Ihala Korale
- Pasbage Korale
- Gangawata Korale
Residents living in low-lying areas and those located close to the Mahaweli River have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their lives and property from possible flooding.
The Department has also requested relevant disaster management authorities to implement immediate preparedness and response measures where necessary.
With further rainfall expected over the coming days, the Department of Irrigation has advised the public to exercise maximum caution and closely monitor weather updates and river conditions.
