Cabinet Approves Extension of Seat Belt Installation Deadline for Expressway Vehicles

August 6, 2026

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to extend by three months the grace period granted to vehicle owners and manufacturers to install seat belts in vehicles operating on Sri Lanka’s expressways.

The extension was granted following requests made by stakeholders in the transport industry.

Under the Motor Vehicles (Expressways) Order No. 2 of 2011, issued in terms of the Motor Traffic Act, it is mandatory for all passengers travelling on expressways to wear seat belts.

The original grace period for installing seat belts in vehicles not already equipped with them was due to expire on June 19, 2026.

However, after considering industry requests, the Government amended the relevant order through Extraordinary Gazette No. 2493/19, dated June 17, 2026, extending the deadline until September 19, 2026.

The proposal, submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, has received Cabinet approval.
