Vance Says Keeping Oil Prices Low Is Top US Priority in Iran War

August 14, 2026

US Vice President JD Vance has said that keeping oil and gasoline prices affordable for Americans is the top US priority in the conflict with Iran, while preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon ranks second.

Speaking to Fox News, Vance said the US wants to keep oil and gas prices low while also ensuring that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.

His comments differ from President Donald Trump’s repeated emphasis that the primary objective of the US military campaign is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it causes short-term economic costs for Americans.

Vance’s remarks also highlight the growing importance of the Strait of Hormuz, which has become a key point of contention as Iran maintains pressure over the strategically vital waterway.

The Vice President said the administration is balancing economic, diplomatic and military tools, with strong economic pressure on Iran continuing while the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz persists.

Meanwhile, US media reports indicate that Trump is also facing concerns over the rapid depletion of stocks of certain missiles and drones.
