Government Approval Rating Falls to 50% – Verité Research Survey

August 17, 2026

The approval rating of Sri Lanka’s current government has declined to 50%, according to the latest “Mood of the Nation” survey conducted by Verité Research in July 2026.

The approval rating stood at 65% in the institute’s February 2026 survey.

The survey also found a significant decline in public confidence in the economy. The proportion of people who believe the country’s economy is improving fell from 64% to 42%, while 40% said the economy is deteriorating.

Meanwhile, 31% of respondents said they were undecided about the performance of the government.

More than half of those surveyed, 56%, rated the current economic situation as “poor”, while only 38% considered it “good” or “very excellent”.

As a result, the Economic Confidence Index, which had remained positive since February 2025, fell to negative 8 (-8) in the latest survey.

The survey was conducted by Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd among 2,013 adults representing all parts of Sri Lanka between July 11 and 30, 2026.
