Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya arrived at Paro International Airport today (31 August) to participate in the inaugural Global Conscious Food Systems Summit 2026, being held in Bhutan from 31 August to 4 September.
The summit, held under the theme “Activating the Heart of Food Systems Transformation,” focuses on the role of consciousness, values, culture, spirituality and inner transformation in developing sustainable, equitable and regenerative food systems. It is jointly hosted by the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Upon her arrival, Prime Minister Amarasuriya was received by the Prime Minister of Bhutan, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, the Minister for Education and Skills Development, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Bhutan’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, and senior officials from the Bhutanese Government and UNDP.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya is scheduled to deliver a high-level address at the summit’s opening plenary on 1 September at Dungkar Dzong under the theme “Rising to the Moment: Igniting Consciousness to Address the Polycrisis.”
During her visit, she is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with the Prime Minister of Bhutan and the Minister for Education and Skills Development. She will further meet several other high-level foreign dignitaries attending the summit, including a former Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Her participation is expected to provide Sri Lanka with an opportunity to share its experiences and perspectives on sustainable, inclusive and people-centred food systems while further strengthening relations between Sri Lanka and Bhutan.
