Ravi Karunanayake Says Sri Lanka Remains Competitive Despite 10% US Tariff

August 2, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has commented on the 10% tariff imposed by the United States on Sri Lankan exports, saying Sri Lanka remains competitive despite the new tax.

He said the US had imposed the tariff based on allegations that forced labour is being used in Sri Lanka, but questioned the basis of those allegations and whether there is evidence to support them.

Karunanayake said he was satisfied that the US tariff was limited to 10%, arguing that this means Sri Lanka remains competitive with its main export competitors.
