Ravi Karunanayake Stresses Importance of Protecting Sri Lanka’s $6 Billion US-EU Export Market

August 3, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has warned that Sri Lanka cannot afford to ignore proposals from major trading partners such as the United States and European Union amid growing global economic pressures.

He said developing countries are increasingly caught between international economic pressures and the strategic interests of powerful nations, while Sri Lanka remains heavily dependent on major export markets.

Karunanayake pointed out that Sri Lanka exports around $6 billion worth of goods annually to the US and EU markets, stressing that maintaining continued access to these markets is crucial for the country’s economic stability.
