Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has urged the government not to introduce a property tax, claiming that the International Monetary Fund is pressuring Sri Lanka to impose such a tax.
Speaking at a media briefing, he said the government should make it clear to the IMF that a new property tax is not necessary at this stage, particularly as government revenue has increased beyond expectations.
Karunanayake said fiscal discipline should focus on managing government expenditure rather than introducing additional taxes. He warned that imposing a property tax could place further pressure on the public and argued that it would not provide meaningful benefits to Sri Lanka.
