Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has welcomed the relatively low 10% US tariff imposed on Sri Lankan exports, but warned that the government should remain vigilant because competing countries have received the same rate.
He pointed out that Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam, which compete with Sri Lanka in key export markets, have also been subjected to a 10% tariff. Therefore, he said Sri Lanka does not have a special advantage simply because its tariff is relatively low.
Karunanayake stressed that maintaining access to markets such as the United States and European Union is essential for Sri Lanka, and urged the government to closely monitor developments involving competing countries.
