Urgent measures should be taken to ease the heavy burden imposed on the public by the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax system, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake said.
Speaking at an event in Colombo, Dr. Kumanayake said the existing situation must be addressed without further delay.
He also emphasized the need to modernize and strengthen Sri Lanka’s Inland Revenue Department to bring it up to standards comparable with those of developed countries.
Dr. Kumanayake made the remarks while attending the 21st Annual General Conference of the Association of Inland Revenue Commissioners in Colombo.
Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaweera and Inland Revenue Commissioner General R.P.H. Fernando were also present at the event.
