Namal Rajapaksa Remanded in Airbus Procurement Case

September 18, 2026

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has been further remanded by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court in connection with investigations into alleged financial irregularities surrounding the procurement of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.

Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, was produced before court today (18) in connection with the investigation.

He was previously named as a suspect in a separate money-laundering investigation linked to the alleged financial irregularities surrounding the 2013 SriLankan Airlines Airbus procurement. The Attorney General had instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to name him as a suspect in that case.

The money-laundering investigation is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and relates to alleged financial transactions connected to the aircraft procurement process.

Rajapaksa is also facing a separate CIABOC investigation over alleged bribery linked to the same Airbus transaction. He was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on September 4 and had initially been remanded until September 18.

The allegations against Rajapaksa have not been proven in court.
