Indian Parliamentary Panel Adopts Report on India-Sri Lanka Relations

September 23, 2026

India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, has adopted its draft report on “India-Sri Lanka Relations and the Way Ahead” following a detailed discussion. The committee’s September 22 meeting agenda officially included consideration and adoption of the report.

Speaking after the meeting, Tharoor said the discussion lasted more than two hours and described the report as a detailed and substantive assessment of India-Sri Lanka relations. He said the report was adopted following agreement among committee members.

The committee also considered two other draft reports during the meeting, covering India’s role in global technology diplomacy, digital governance, space diplomacy, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, as well as action taken by the government on recommendations concerning the Ministry of External Affairs’ demands for grants for 2026–27.

The report comes amid continued engagement between India and Sri Lanka. During his official visit to Sri Lanka from September 8 to 10, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka and highlighted the longstanding ties between the two countries.

The committee’s adopted report is expected to contain observations and recommendations on the future direction of India-Sri Lanka relations.
