The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has taken more than 1,400 reusable plastic bottles and baby feeding bottles into custody following islandwide inspections conducted last week.
The CAA said 144 raids and inspections were carried out, including 96 inspections of reusable plastic bottles used for drinking liquids and 48 inspections of polymer-based baby feeding bottles.
The products are regulated under Direction No. 96, which came into effect on April 1, 2026. Reusable plastic bottles must comply with SLS 1616, while baby feeding bottles are covered by SLS 1306.
The CAA said locally manufactured products must carry the SLS Product Certification Mark issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). Imported products are not required to carry the SLS mark but must be inspected and approved under the SLSI Import Inspection Scheme.
Officials also examined bills, invoices and supply records to trace non-compliant products through retailers and distributors to manufacturers or importers.
The CAA advised consumers to check product information carefully and retain their receipts. Suspected non-compliant products can be reported through the CAA hotline 1977 during office hours.
