Former United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has said that the government should move towards holding Provincial Council elections after resolving the existing issues related to electoral delimitation.
Speaking in an interview with Ceylon Wire, Karunanayake said that if the government fails to take steps to hold the elections, questions could arise regarding its two-thirds majority in Parliament and its approach to governance.
He said holding an election would not be an issue for the opposition, noting that opposition parties have already been calling for Provincial Council elections.
Karunanayake added that if the government takes steps to conduct the election, the opposition would also be prepared to form an alliance.
