Three Breast Cancer Patients Die Every Day in Sri Lanka

October 7, 2026

The National Cancer Control Programme has revealed that three breast cancer patients die in Sri Lanka every day.

Director of the programme, Dr. Senaka Talagala, said approximately 6,000 new breast cancer cases are reported annually, while more than 1,000 people die from the disease each year.

Speaking at a cancer control event organized by the Colombo Municipal Council, Dr. Talagala noted that breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among Sri Lankan women.

He stressed the importance of early detection, timely treatment, and continuous follow-up to improve treatment outcomes.

He also urged the public to seek medical advice as soon as symptoms appear, warning that delays in seeking treatment can significantly reduce the chances of successful outcomes.

“It is unfortunate that, even when clear symptoms are present, many patients delay treatment for a significant period before coming to the hospital. By that time, achieving good treatment outcomes becomes much more challenging,” he said.
