Cabinet approval has been granted to deploy a new ferry capable of carrying 150 passengers to improve passenger transport services between the Jaffna Peninsula and the surrounding islands, including Delft.
The project is being implemented under the “Praja Shakthi” national programme to address difficulties faced by residents due to the lack of safe and adequate passenger transport facilities.
The ferry will be manufactured by the Cinor Foundation, while its operations will be managed by the Delft Development Society, which functions under the Samurdhi Development Department.
Revenue generated through the ferry service will be used to support livelihood development activities for low-income residents in the Delft area.
Cabinet approval was granted for the proposal submitted by the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources.
