October 7, 2026

Minister of Social Security Upali Pannilage has stated in Parliament that, according to expert projections, one in every four people in Sri Lanka is expected to be over the age of 60 by 2041.

He said the government has already identified the challenges associated with the country’s ageing population and is taking systematic measures to address them.

The Minister further stated that the government is developing comprehensive plans to introduce appropriate social security mechanisms to meet the social and economic needs of the elderly population, which is expected to continue growing in the coming years.
