A low-pressure area may form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal today (13), raising the likelihood of increased rainfall across Sri Lanka over the next few days, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The Department said the system could bring increased rainfall to the island and surrounding deep and shallow sea areas.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times across most parts of the country today. Heavy rainfall of around 100–150 mm is possible in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is also likely in some areas of the other provinces.
The public has been urged to take adequate precautions against temporary, localised strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.
