Sri Lanka’s recently introduced Metro bus service has come under scrutiny following questions raised about its seating arrangements, fuel efficiency and passenger capacity.
The issue gained attention after Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Jagath Withana raised several concerns about the service during a parliamentary committee meeting on transport.
One of the questions concerned the absence of a reserved seat for members of the clergy. In response, officials reportedly said the matter would be addressed within a few days.
The bus service’s fuel efficiency was another issue raised during the discussion.
Questions were also raised about the advertised passenger capacity and the number of seats available on the buses.
“Although it was advertised that the bus could accommodate 80 passengers, it has only 40 seats. Consequently, passengers are forced to pay a higher fare than the standard rate while also having to travel standing up,” MP Jagath Withana said.
