Hambantota Port Handles Over 167,000 Vehicles Between March 2025 and September 2026

October 16, 2026

The Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) says 167,569 vehicles were handled and transshipped through the Hambantota International Port between March 2025 and September 2026.

Of the total, 86,389 vehicles were handled between March and December 2025, including 30,809 brand-new vehicles and 55,580 used vehicles.

A further 81,180 vehicles were handled from January to September 2026, comprising 25,018 brand-new vehicles and 56,162 used vehicles.

HIPG said it had taken measures to support importers amid rising vehicle demand and logistical disruptions affecting vehicle transportation.

The Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL), which represents more than 450 members ranging from large enterprises to micro, small and medium-sized importers, has commended HIPG for its responsiveness, operational flexibility and practical support.

During the period when vehicle import restrictions were in place, HIPG introduced demurrage fee waivers and other concessions for vehicles held at the port for extended periods. According to the company, these measures helped facilitate vehicle clearance and reduce the financial burden on importers.

HIPG has also recently introduced a scheme to cap storage fees for vehicles affected by disruptions to transshipment routes through the Gulf region.

HIPG Chief Executive Officer Wilson Qu said meeting increased demand required not only sufficient port-handling capacity but also an understanding of customers’ operational needs and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
