The Illegal Assets Investigation Division has taken steps to freeze cash and property worth more than Rs. 85 million suspected of being acquired through drug trafficking.
Police said the assets include Rs. 15 million in cash and a two-storey house in the Madagal area of Jaffna, valued at more than Rs. 70 million.
The investigation began on August 31, 2023, when officers from the Special Task Force (STF) camp in Jaffna arrested five suspects who were in possession of Rs. 15 million in cash and a lorry. The suspects were subsequently handed over to the Kopai Police for further investigations.
Further investigations by the Illegal Assets Investigation Division revealed that a 32-year-old suspect from Madagal had allegedly constructed the two-storey house using money earned through drug trafficking.
The seized Rs. 15 million is currently in the custody of the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court.
Acting under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, authorities have issued an order to freeze the cash and property for 14 days, effective from October 15, 2026.
The Illegal Assets Investigation Division is continuing its investigations into the matter.
