A panel of experts from the University of Peradeniya is expected to examine the remains of Tusker Kawantissa to determine the cause of its death.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation said it would present the relevant facts before court today to obtain an order to examine the remains.
Kawantissa, considered one of the largest and tallest wild elephants in Sri Lanka, died yesterday despite round-the-clock treatment by specialist veterinary teams from the Department.
The tusker had been suffering from severe injuries caused by a gunshot. Although the wound on its front right leg had begun to heal, its condition deteriorated due to dehydration after it refused to eat, ultimately leading to its death.
