NBRI Issues Landslide Warnings for Five Districts Amid Heavy Rain

October 21, 2026

The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has issued landslide warnings for vulnerable areas in the Badulla, Kegalle, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts, effective until 4.00 p.m. today (October 21).

Amber-level alerts have been issued for parts of Kegalle and Ratnapura, while yellow-level warnings cover vulnerable areas in all five districts.

The institute warned that continued rainfall could trigger landslides, slope failures, rockfalls and ground subsidence.

Residents have been urged to watch for warning signs, including cracks in the ground, leaning trees and muddy water emerging from the ground. Anyone noticing such signs should move to a safe location immediately.

People living in landslide-prone areas have also been advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
